Creation Waits
Why do people worship the Earth? Why do they humble themselves at the vastness of the universe? Why do they assign power to it and give it credit for the course their lives take? Creation is seen as something so mysterious, alive, and powerful that people have worshiped it for thousands of years.
Creation is definitely powerful, but those who worship mother nature or the universe itself are missing something very important. Creation itself worships. The Universe and the Earth we live on humble themselves and adore. Creation is pointing us toward something. That which has been made worships the One who made it. It is not divine in itself, but it is full of signs that point to our Father. We make a great mistake when we think the earth is the thing to be glorified. The Universe doesn't even want to be worshiped. It wants to point you to God. That is it's intended purpose.
Just think about it.
The universe is vast and powerful and unfathomable. Just when you think you’ve reached the end of it you realize you’ve barely begun. This is a reflection of God’s greatness. This is a sign that points toward His endless love, goodness, and power. Just when you think you’ve learned everything there is to know about Him another world is opened up to you and you realize He’s even greater than you thought possible. And you’re filled with awe and excitement about the mystery and the thrill of discovering more.
The ocean in all of its breathtaking power is the same. We are mesmerized by the waves. I could watch them crash onto the shore over, and over, and over. It never gets old. His love is like this. Revelation of His heart is like this. It hits you over and over, wave after wave after wave. Each one different. Some small, rushing over your feet. Some consume you and drag you into the surf, roll you, and crash you back up onto the shore and you’re left stunned at the thrill of it all.
The grass follows the sun. Did you know that? The blades of grass follow the sun as it rises over them and sets. They long for it. They were designed to show us that we need the Son like grass needs the sun. We thrive when we keep our eyes on Him. We grow when we follow His movement.
And the trees. When it is about to rain, the leaves on the trees turn up, as if the tree is cupping its hands to receive the water. This reflects our need for the Living water. Even the trees are telling us to seek God to fill us up. The colors, the sounds, the movement. The world is alive. It’s full of life. All of it down to the tiniest detail designed, molded, spoken into being. God doesn’t just love us, He loves us extravagantly and offers us endless beauty and creativity. It’s all this way because He loves us.
Unfortunately we worship these created things. We look at all this power and beauty and mystery and conclude that the power must be within it. But the power is what sustains it. The power is what created it. The earth is covered with God’s fingerprints. It is full of His DNA. It points to Him. This is why we marvel at it. We are intrigued and always have been because we have always been looking into our Father’s mind and heart. These things point to God. They are not divine in themselves; they are the work of the King of Kings.
And do you know what else? Creation is in awe of us. Yes. The world was created for us. It was meant to be enjoyed, cultivated, and cared for by the Children of God. But when sin entered the world everything became broken. Everything was thrown off. The natural world began to reflect the Children's state. When we broke it broke. The weather is broken. The ecosystem is broken. We were meant to be able to enjoy all of creation without fear of it. Instead we spend most of our lives trying to survive in it. We build shelter to keep us away from it. We have to avoid its poison, its terrible strength.
It wasn’t supposed to be like this.
Do you know that God protected nature from us? God confused nature (see Romans 8). It was meant to be attracted to us and sustain us and to enjoy us. But when God’s children rejected Him and put their trust in the enemy, when they rejected the only source of life, the result was death. That’s just a + b = c. If you take a flower out of the sun and put it in a closet it’s going to wither and die. There is no other source of light for a flower than the sun. Even if you use lamps or some other form of artificial light the sun is still the source. In the same way, there is no life apart from Him because it doesn’t exist outside of Him.
Mankind chose separation and all of creation fell with them. But God still had a plan. And He wanted to protect the innocent creation from the will of those who had chosen to become enemies. So He subjected it to frustration, to confusion, to protect it. Animals are afraid of us for a reason. Unless you can get one and raise it from birth, an animal will avoid a human at all costs. One look at an animal cruelty picture will tell you why. He also did this because He did not create the world to be in the hands of the cruel. Would you let the one who destroyed your child come in and sleep in his bedroom? The earth does not recognize us. We are like a virus on it. It wasn’t made for these sinful beings. It was made for the children of God. We are like a cancer to the earth. We look like we belong here, but we destroy everything. The earth is trying to get rid of us like our immune system tries to get rid of a foreign object.
But we are being restored. We are becoming glorious again. We are turning back into ourselves. And God is excited, so the Earth is too. You can find this scripture in Romans 8:
“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.”
People mistakenly worship creation while creation worships God and longs for us. It wants us to come back. It wants to be healthy again, but cannot be until we are. At the cross all that beauty began to begin again. The restoration process of His sons and daughters has begun and the whole world can’t wait. It’s starting to recognize us again. It sees the Father in us. It responds to the Father in us. And the blades of grass and the trees and the sun and the waves and the birds and the flowers and the animals are all trying to tell us to press on toward that restoration. They’re trying to show us to seek Jesus. To seek the Father. They want restoration. They are working with God to point us toward Him.
The day is here when God is doing this. Because Jesus rose from the dead, everything is changing. We are in the time of this scripture:
Isaiah 45:8 “You heavens above, rain down my righteousness; let the clouds shower it down. Let the earth open wide, let salvation spring up, let righteousness flourish with it; I, the Lord, have created it.
Creations knows His name. Creation worships Jesus. Stop worshiping the created things. Instead look at what they’re pointing to and be restored. Then you’ll soon see the world for what it was really supposed to be… not this shadow we live in now. A time is coming when what you plant will produce fruit and not be consumed by weeds and insects...they'll be doing what they were originally created to do before all this mess, whatever that is. A time is coming when the sun won’t burn your skin and the water can’t drown you. In the meantime, go out and let what has been created point you to truth. Listen to the world’s cues and worship God. Just go outside and feel the earth on your feet and walk in the grass. Watch something grow. Listen to the Earth move and sing and sing with it. Lay under the stars and planets. Plant and cultivate. Harvest and enjoy. Get a pet and love it like you’re meant to. Be alive in this world as you look toward the restoration of it all and be in awe of the love that God has lavished on us all.
Here's a great truth and something neat to think about: All of creation is waiting in eager expectation for you to be revealed.
